Austin commenced his music studies in Korea at the age of 8, and then went on to study flute with Kellie Grennan from the age of 14. In 2010 he was awarded his ATCL diploma with distinction from Trinity College London, and in 2014 received a distinction in his LTCL diploma. Austin was the school music captain in his final year at The King's School. He received full marks for his music extension course for the HSC, and subsequently a nomination for the "HSC Encore".
Austin has participated in masterclasses and lessons with internationally renowned flutists such as Alexa Still and Jane Rutter, and played flute with the Peter Seymour Orchestra in 2008 and 2009.
Austin recently graduated from the University of NSW with a Bachelor of Medicine and Arts (majoring in music) degree. He held the position of principal flute with the UNSW Symphony Orchestra from 2011 until 2017. Austin has also played flute and piccolo with the SBS Youth Orchestra, Australian Doctor's Orchestra, NSW Doctor's Orchestra, NSW Symphony Orchestra and North Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
Austin currently teaches at Cranbrook School and St Joseph's College.
He plays a handmade Altus flute with a gold Tomasi head joint.
